Timeline
09:00
Walk into Golgulsa Temple as the gates open at 09:00. The cool shade of the cave temple and the solid rock walls offer a immediate sense of calm. This is the best time to explore the sculptured Maya Tathagata Buddha and the ancient ruins before the midday sun gets high.
09:45
Head back out toward the main path. Since there are no food or drink shops listed in the immediate temple vicinity, check the route for local buses or taxis back toward Munmu-daewang-myeon to find a nearby spot for lunch. The temple is 20 km east of the ancient capital, so plan your transport carefully.
10:15
Return to the temple grounds for a final look. The afternoon light filters differently through the trees, highlighting the texture of the 6th-century rock structures. Take your time to absorb the history of Saint Kwang Yoo and his Indian companions before heading out.
