Golden Hour at the Old Grey One

A walk through Groningen’s historic heart, timed for the last light of day.

Best time: 15 JanAbout 180 min

Timeline

  1. 14:00

    WAAR

Start with a quiet coffee and a pastry at WAAR. It opens at 08:30 on weekdays, making it the perfect early stop before the crowds gather.

  2. 15:15

    De Uurwerker

Walk to the square in front of the Martini Tower. Grab a slice of pizza from De Uurwerker and find a spot on the stone steps to people-watch.

  3. 16:15

    Martini Tower and Church

Head up the Martini Tower. Arrive just as the golden light begins to fade, giving you time to see the city stretch out in the warm glow before the sun dips below the horizon.

  4. 17:00

    Der Witz

End the evening at Der Witz, a small 'Brown Café' on the Grote Markt. It is open from 10:00 on Saturdays, so you can settle in with a beer as the city lights turn on.

Local tip

The square in front of De Uurwerker is shared with De Pintelier bar and gets crowded on warm nights. If it is busy, step slightly back toward the tower for a quieter view.
