Drive to the Gaborone Dam. The dam is a recreational area with parks and playgrounds. Find a quiet spot on the shore with a view of the water to the west. The area is suitable for birdwatching and angling. Note that swimming is unsuitable due to bilharzia and crocodiles.
05:40
Watch the sunrise. The sun rises toward the WSW. The golden light starts about 18 minutes after sunrise. This is the key moment. The view is best from the dam shore.
06:10
Head to the Gaborone Yacht Club for breakfast. It is located down a dusty track to the side of the dam. The bar offers simple food like a steak-burger and chips. There is a P10 entrance fee. Check the opening hours carefully as they are limited. It opens for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and in the evenings on Wednesdays and Fridays. If today is not one of these days, you may need to check the route for other options or return later.
Local tip
The Yacht Club has limited opening hours. If you arrive on a weekday morning, it will be closed. Plan for a weekend or Friday evening if you want to eat there. Otherwise, bring your own breakfast or check the route for other breakfast spots.
