Timeline

    Lake Matheson Cafe

Pick up coffee or a light bite at Lake Matheson Cafe before the light fades. The cafe is open late in summer, but in April it closes at 4 PM, so arrive early to secure a seat and grab a warm drink to take with you.

  2. 17:47

    Lake Matheson

Walk the 20 minutes to the first lookout on the well-maintained track around the lake. This gives you enough time to find a spot on the specially-made platforms for the best angle of the mountain reflections as the golden light begins.

  3. 18:07

    Lake Matheson

Watch the sunset. The sun sets toward the WNW, aligning perfectly with the view across the lake. Stay at the platform to see the peaks reflect in the water as the sky changes color.

  4. 18:37

    Lake Matheson Cafe

Return to Lake Matheson Cafe for dinner. The blackboard menus change to suit seasonal ingredients, offering a cozy end to an evening view of the Southern Alps.

Local tip

The track is about 4.4 km in total, but you only need to walk 20 minutes to reach the best viewing platforms. Wear warm layers as it gets chilly after sunset.
