Time your visit for the late afternoon glow. The sun sets toward the WSW, casting long shadows across the ice.

Best time: sunsetAbout 75 min

Timeline

  1. 20:35

Grab a coffee or snack before you start. There are no food shops listed in the immediate area, so check the route to find a cafe in the village center or bring your own provisions from the car park.

  2. 20:50

    Chalet Lookout Walk

Start the Chalet Lookout Walk. The track begins at the car park at the end of Glacier View Road. It is a 1 hour 15 minute round-trip, so leave enough time to reach the lookout point and return safely in the fading light.

  3. 21:20

    Fox Glacier South Side Viewpoint

At the Chalet Lookout, face the glacier as the sun dips below the horizon. The view is best from the South Side Viewpoint area, which is an 8-minute walk from the anchor point. The golden light will highlight the ice textures just before the sun sets.

  4. 21:40

    Glacier Viewpoint

After the main moment, wander over to the Glacier Viewpoint. It is an 11-minute walk from the anchor. The light here is softer, and the WNW sunset direction (in April) or WSW (in January) offers different perspectives of the valley.

Local tip

The walk involves a stream crossing. Check the route for any recent weather impacts before you go. Bring warm layers as it gets cold quickly after sunset.

Check before you go

  • Check the route for stream crossing conditions.
  • Bring a headlamp for the return walk in the dark.
  • No food shops are listed at the trailhead; plan accordingly.
