Sunset

Golden Hour at the National Monument

A short climb to catch the last light of day, starting with a pint in the sun.

Best time: 15:00About 120 min

Timeline

  1. 14:40

    Sandy Bells

Start with a drink at Sandy Bells. The pub is open from 12:00 on weekdays and weekends, so you can grab a pint and settle in well before the climb. The live folk music adds a local rhythm to the start of your evening.

  2. 15:40

    Calton Hill

Walk up Calton Hill. The ascent takes about 32 minutes from the anchor area, but from Sandy Bells it is a shorter, steeper stroll. You will reach the top with 30 minutes to spare before sunset. Find a spot near the National Monument to watch the sky change. The sun sets toward the SW, framing the view perfectly.

  3. 16:40

    Cameo Cinema

End the evening at the Cameo Cinema. After the fresh air, head back down to catch a mainstream, arthouse, or alternative film in the Edwardian interior. It is the perfect way to transition from the golden light outside to the darkness of the screen.

Local tip

The walk up Calton Hill is short but steep. Wear comfortable shoes. Sandy Bells opens at 12:00, so you have plenty of time to enjoy a pre-climb drink without rushing.

Check before you go

  • Sandy Bells is open Mo-Sa 12:00-01:00 and Su 12:30-24:00.
  • Calton Hill is accessible at all times, but check daylight hours for safety if you arrive later than the planned sunset.
