Timeline
09:30
Arrive at Orokonui EcoSanctuary as it opens. The self-guided option is a great way to explore the 307-hectare enclosure at your own pace before the midday crowds arrive. You will see native birds like Kaka and Tui, and perhaps a Tuatara, moving naturally in their safe haven.
11:00
Check the route for a snack or lunch. The sanctuary is located on the scenic route between Port Chalmers and Waitati, so there are likely local spots along that path to refuel after your walk.
11:30
End your visit by lingering at the edge of the sanctuary or heading toward Waitati to stretch your legs. The pest-proof fence and native setting provide a unique backdrop for a final photo or rest before you head back.
Local tip
Book your guided tours in advance if you want to see Kiwis, as night tours run only twice a week and day tours are popular. The self-guided entry is sufficient for a relaxed morning.
