Timeline
15:40
Visit the visitor centre to understand the history. The cemetery is free to walk, but the tour makes the names and stories make sense. Arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the quiet atmosphere before the golden hour.
16:40
Walk nine minutes east-northeast to the National Botanic Gardens. The gateway is adjacent to the cemetery. Spend an hour wandering the alkaline-loving species and the Palm House, where Wittgenstein once warmed his backside.
17:30
Head back towards the cemetery entrance and walk six minutes to John Kavanagh's. This mournfully authentic pub has been here since 1833, little altered. Order a drink and toast the departed in the next-door cemetery as the golden light begins.
Local tip
The visitor centre is closed Monday and Tuesday. Plan your visit for Wednesday through Sunday.
