Timeline

Drive 22 km east from Dilijan to the monastery grounds. The complex is quiet in the late afternoon, giving you space to admire the carved details before the crowds arrive. The groundskeeper is usually around to open the main church if you want a closer look, though the exterior architecture is stunning enough on its own.
17:04
Find a spot near the main church entrance. As the sun dips toward the WSW, the stone walls catch a warm, amber glow. This is the perfect moment to take in the atmosphere before the light fades completely.
17:44
Head back down the 6 km off-road section and then the 16 km highway toward Dilijan. The drive is short, but the temperature drops quickly once the sun is gone.
18:14
Check the route for a restaurant in Dilijan town. You will need a place that is open for dinner to warm up after the evening air at the monastery.
Local tip
The groundskeeper may not offer tours in English, so enjoy the exterior carvings and the peaceful village setting if the main chamber is closed or only available in Armenian.
