Sunrise at Raj Ghat

A quiet morning ritual at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, timed with the first light of day.

Best time: sunriseAbout 60 min

Timeline

  1. 04:52

    National Gandhi Museum

Arrive at the National Gandhi Museum. Walk the six minutes from the main entrance toward the viewing area. This spot is specifically aligned so that, between early June and early July, the sun rises directly behind Raj Ghat. The museum is open, and the morning light here is still soft and quiet before the crowds arrive.

  2. 05:22

    Raj Ghat

Move to Raj Ghat itself. Stand at the black marble platform where Gandhi was cremated. Watch the sun crest over the memorial. The site is open from 09:30, but since this is a sunrise plan in early summer, you will be arriving just as the gates open or slightly before if permitted by early security checks. Keep your voice low and respect the solemnity of the site.

  3. 06:07

    Daryaganj and Asaf Ali Road

Head to Daryaganj and Asaf Ali Road for breakfast. This shopping area is a 13-minute walk from the monument. By this time, the morning rush has settled, and the shops, including the well-known Hindi Book Centre, are open and active. Grab a simple meal or coffee to start your day properly.

Local tip

The alignment at the National Gandhi Museum is specific to the summer months. If you visit outside June and July, the sun will not rise directly behind Raj Ghat from this viewpoint. Check the opening hours for the museum and shops, as they can vary on national holidays.

Check before you go

  • Raj Ghat is open 09:30-17:30 daily. For a sunrise plan, confirm if early entry is allowed or if you must wait for opening time.
  • Security checks are common. Arrive with plenty of time.
  • Daryaganj and Asaf Ali Road shops open early, but exact hours vary by vendor.

Worth knowing

  • Sun position is calculated. We have not confirmed the view is unobstructed.
