Timeline

  1. 10:30

    Chandni Chowk

Start in Chandni Chowk. Use the Fountain as your orientation point and navigate the crowded, twisting alleys to find Delhi-style snacks for a light breakfast.

  2. 11:15

    Khari Baoli

Walk away from the Red Fort through Chandni Chowk to Khari Baoli. This is the primary spice market in Old Delhi. Buy individual spices, especially cardamom in bulk, and enjoy a masala chai.

  3. 12:45

    Kake Di Hatti

Head to Kake Di Hatti for lunch. Order North Indian curry vegetables like Dal Makhani or Shahi Paneer. The naans are very big, so one is usually enough for two people.

  4. 17:15

    Hayat Bakhsh Bagh

Walk to Hayat Bakhsh Bagh. Once a grand garden full of fountains and streams, it is now mostly dry channels and acres of green grass. It is a quiet place to rest before the main event.

  5. 17:45

    Hayat Bakhsh Bagh

Stay at Hayat Bakhsh Bagh to watch the sunset. On 15 January, the sun sets toward the WSW at 17:45. Golden light starts about 17:11, offering a soft glow over the dry channels and grass.

Local tip

Chandni Chowk is extremely crowded. Keep your belongings secure and be prepared for dense foot traffic. Kake Di Hatti is open from 08:00 to 01:00, so you have plenty of time for lunch.

Check before you go

  • Kake Di Hatti opens at 08:00.
  • One naan at Kake Di Hatti is enough for two people.
