Tivoli

Tivoli is a garden built around a lake stemming from the old fortification of the city. It was opened in 1843 by its founder Georg Carstensen, just outside the city walls. Since then Copenhagen has grown up around it, and today the world-famous gardens and amusement park, is a magic and green oasis smack in the center of the city, between the central station and the city hall square. The magic is particularly obvious after dark, when the lights and lanterns in every colour of the rainbow, lights up everywhere. Main season is mid-April to late September. From mid November to late December there is Christmas in Tivoli. Tivoli is especially beautiful at night when coloured lamps light up everywhere. Pop/rock concerts every Friday night, sometimes with internationally known names. Some evenings end with fireworks, consult the programme. Also brass bands, pantomime theatre, etc., on the program.

Part of the public broadcasters new and problem ridden headquarters in Ørestad, this gem designed by French architect Jean Nouvel is the main reason behind the massive budget overruns of the project — with its final price tag approaching USD 300 million, it is among the most expensive concert halls ever built.

Jazzhus Montmartre

Cafe Montmartre

One of the best-known jazz clubs in Europe during the 1960s, Jazzhus Montmartre hosted the African-American expats in Europe such as Dexter Gordon, Kenny Drew, and Bud Powell. Local bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen got his start here as a member of Powell's trio in 1962. Jazzhus Montmartre changed locations a few times before closing in 1995, but reopened in 2010.

The country's only privately owned concert hall, featuring some interesting architecture as it has been fitted into some old stables. The programme mainly features classical Chamber music, with artists from all over Europe.

Rust

Rust is where most people head after 00:00 from the many bars above. It is one of the city's best clubs, but also a music stage for rhythmic music concerts several times per week (check website for program).

Loppen

It is a rock club where various alternative bands play live. The room in the old artillery storage with low ceilings and sturdy dark wooden support pillars can fit up to 450 people. The low stage takes you face to face with the bands playing, creating an intimate atmosphere, much appreciated by local bands who often forgo bookings at bigger stages elsewhere to play there.

Café Intime

A really cosy, and as the name suggests; intimate bar, with candle light, coloured lamps and purposely messy decoration. Frequent live Jazz and Classic music acts, which also turns really intimate as there isn't a lot of space, after a piano has been set up. Traditionally a gay bar, but straight customers are neither turned away nor frowned upon. Very friendly staff!

Cafe Svejk

Located at the northern entrance to Frederiksberg Have, this small bar serves Czech Bohemia Regent beer (its own import - the bar is named after a Czech cartoon). Sometimes there are football matches and sometimes there is live music, but that is all rather random.

Ideal Bar

It is no longer a bar since 2016. It is now the smallest venue of Vega. Ideal bar is a branch of the Vega nightclub, handing out drinks at street level in the same building, but it is run as a separate outfit, with a bit more appeal to the happening crowd. It is usually too crowded to sit, so only go here early or if you are ready to dance the hours away on the small but usually packed dance floor. Unlike Vega there is no cover charge.

Set up by two ambitious Icelandic girls, this club was too loud for its old location on Nørrebro, so it moved its noise and nice vibes here, and continue to be hugely popular, and the DJ line up certainly lives up to the two owners ambitiousness

La Fontaine

Oldest jazz bar with live jazz music. Double up on beer and liquor Monday to Saturday between 20:00 and 22:00.

Small cozy cafe that gets up and going Fridays and Saturdays with live music and a lively, rocking crowd. Their live music quality is rather high, but is free entry.

Club Mambo

Copenhagen's main Latin venue, with a large dance floor for salsa dancing, and a lounge bar with a wider variety of music. Free Salsa lessons every Thursday from 20:00-21:00. It is totally random whether the place is jam packed or really quiet.

Culture Box

Culture Box is the flagship of the electronic music scene in Copenhagen, and is immensely important for the local development of the genre. Mixes superstar DJs with local talent. Usually a friendly, open crowd, and non commercial music blasting out the speakers.

Guldfasanen

A local watering hole, popular with students from the nearby CBS university, but also with local alcoholics who are mostly there for the cheap beer, while students prefer the basic but very reasonably priced cocktails and "kander" (a cocktail pitcher for 145-189 Kr). This place for heavy drinking and smoking.

Hellerup Sejlklub

This is the restaurant in Hellerup Sailing Club. But non-members are welcome (although some tables are reservered for club member). You get excellent food at reasonable prices and in the summer you can enjoy the spectacular view over Øresund from the rooftop terrace.

This is probably the best cocktail bar in town in the moment, although, visitors should keep in mind that this is Scandinavia, and a night out here could easily break a budget. This is, however, a great place to do it, with attentive and qualified bartenders, and a well designed interior.

Lygten Station

Cultural house and concert venue in a beautiful old disused station building, right by Nørrebro station. The area outdoors has tables and serves beer in the summer, inside there is a stage. Hosts art exhibitions, concerts (jazz and rock), film screenings etc. according to the program posted on their website.

Karriere Bar

Although this bar can be difficult to find in between the meat shops and shady alleys, it is usually packed with a mix of trendy students and young professionals after midnight. Before that you can have dinner in their restaurant.
