Best time: noneAbout 120 min

Timeline

  1. 10:00

    MV Ithaca

Head northeast from the road leading to the abandoned radio station building with the "big golf balls" on top. In the summer low tide, you can hike out across the tidal flats to the MV Ithaca wreck. The 260-ft steamship ran aground in 1960, and locals once stripped it for its ore cargo. Check with locals first to ensure the tide and ground conditions are safe for the walk.

  2. 11:00

Enjoy a packed lunch or snack on the flats or nearby. There are no food or drink shops listed in the immediate vicinity, so bring your own provisions.

  3. 11:30

    MV Ithaca

Before heading back, take a moment to appreciate the view from the helicopter perspective if available, or simply rest near the wreck site. The area offers a stark, historical landscape shaped by both maritime accident and local industry.
