Start with a coffee at Ilex Café. It is just a two-minute walk from the Botanic Gardens entrance and opens early enough to beat the crowds.
17:12
Walk into the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Spend the next half hour wandering the paths. The gates open at 7AM, so you have plenty of time to explore before the sun dips.
17:57
Find the 'Diminish and Ascend' sculpture. This welded aluminum stairway creates an optical illusion best appreciated in the fading afternoon light. At sunset on 15 April, the sun sets toward the WNW, casting long shadows across the structure.
18:42
End the evening at the Pegasus Arms. It is a twelve-minute walk from the gardens and stays open late, making it a perfect spot to unwind after your walk.
Local tip
Check the gates opening times. They close one hour before sunset, so plan your exit accordingly.
