    Christchurch Farmers' Market

Start your morning at the Christchurch Farmers' Market in the grounds of Riccarton House. It is a lively affair where you can meet the growers, farmers, brewers and other artisan producers. Arriving at opening time ensures you catch the best of the fresh local produce before the crowds build.

    Riccarton Bush

Walk over to Riccarton Bush, the last remaining forest remnant on the Canterbury plains. This is a great way to experience an example of the country's native forests. The circular track passes under tall kahikatea trees, and there is a diversity of small trees, shrubs, climbers and ferns. Christchurch's oldest house, Dean's Cottage (built 1843), is adjacent and worth a quick look.

    Park Ranger

Head to Park Ranger for a coffee and a break. This café is conveniently located just a short walk from the bush, making it an easy stop to recharge before continuing your exploration of the area.

Local tip

The market is only open on Saturdays. If you visit on a different day, the bush is open daily, but you will need to find lunch elsewhere.
