Golden Hour at The Cobbles

Cheshire is quiet in the evening, but the views from The Cobbles are worth the trek. Arrive just before the sun dips below the western horizon to catch the last warm light on Mt Greylock and Cheshire Lake.

Timeline

  1. 15:44

    Cheshire Cobble Trailhead

Start at the East parking lot for the Chalet Wildlife Area. This is the trailhead for the Cheshire Cobble Trail. Park here and prepare for a moderate uphill walk west toward the anchor point.

  2. 16:24

    The Cobbles

Reach The Cobbles. You are now at the junction with the Appalachian Trail. Find a spot facing WSW to watch the sun set over the surrounding countryside. The lack of hunting in this area makes it safe and peaceful for lingering.

  3. 17:14

    Cheshire Cobble Trailhead

After the light fades, walk back down the trail to the East parking lot. The 16-minute walk back is easy in the twilight.

Local tip

There are no food or drink shops in the immediate vicinity of The Cobbles or the Chalet Wildlife Area. Plan to have dinner and a drink in Cheshire town before or after your visit, as you will need to drive to find services after dark.

Check before you go

  • The trail is exposed. Check the weather forecast for wind and temperature, especially in winter months when sunset is early.
  • Bring headlamps or flashlights for the walk back to the car after sunset.
  • The Chalet Wildlife Management Area does not permit hunting in this section, but always exercise standard trail safety.
