Timeline
07:16
Arrive at the Imperial War Museum Duxford entrance. The site opens at 10:00, but for this sunrise plan you are outside the main gates or in the car park area before opening. Park and prepare your gear. The air is crisp in January, so dress warmly. You have time to scout the best vantage point near the aircraft displays before the light changes.
08:01
Watch the sunrise. On 15 January, the sun rises at 08:01, casting a soft light over the tarmac and the silhouettes of the aircraft. The golden light begins around 15:18, but the initial sunrise moment offers a stark, quiet contrast between the dark metal of the war machines and the waking sky. The sun sets toward the SW, but the early morning light from the East illuminates the front of the collection.
08:46
Head inside for breakfast or coffee. Once the golden light hits (around 15:18) or shortly after sunrise, the museum opens its doors at 10:00. Since 08:01 is before opening, you will need to wait inside the visitor center or cafe area until 10:00 to get proper service. Use this time to browse the land warfare museum or simply enjoy the warmth. The museum is large, so a coffee break is a practical way to digest the morning view before deciding if you want to explore the Concorde or the aircraft hangars.
Local tip
The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. If you arrive before opening, you can still access the exterior grounds and car park for the sunrise, but the cafes and indoor exhibits will not be available until 10:00. Bring a thermos if you want to drink something warm while waiting for the doors to open.
