Start up the Maud S Canyon Trail. It is a two-mile climb with 900 feet of elevation gain through old gold claims and aspen groves. The trail is quiet in the morning, and the steep section toward the Continental Divide Trail is manageable if you pace yourself.

Reach Father Sheehan Park for the sunrise. The sun rises toward the WSW, offering a clear view of the city below as the golden light begins to hit the buildings around 16:23.

Head to City Brew Coffee for a warm drink and breakfast. The café opens at 05:30, so it is ready for you well before the sun is fully up.
Local tip
The trail can be icy in January. Wear sturdy boots and check the route if you are unfamiliar with the climb.
