Timeline

  1. 10:00

    Purdown AA Battery

Walk the grounds of Purdown AA Battery. This preserved site on the hilltop offers a quiet, overgrown look at Bristol’s Second World War defences. The grounds are open 24/7 and free to enter.

  2. 10:45

    Cosies

Head down to St Pauls and find Cosies. This bar is hidden down some steps and through a small door, creating an underground cave atmosphere. It is a unique spot to rest and have a drink away from the main crowds.

  3. 11:45

    Taste of Napoli

Walk to Taste of Napoli for lunch. This Italian restaurant is close to Castle Park and offers authentic pizza, arancini, and sandwiches. It is a welcoming place with plenty of choice for vegetarians and vegans alike.

  4. 12:30

    The Apple

Finish at The Apple, a floating cider bar on a converted Dutch barge. You can sit on the decks and enjoy West Country ciders while watching the water. It is open from 12:00 to 24:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, and until 22:30 on Sundays.

Local tip

The walk from the battery to the St Pauls area is steep. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the descent. The Apple is a popular spot, so arriving before the evening rush is best.

Check before you go

  • The Apple is closed on Mondays. Check opening hours if visiting on a Monday.
  • Purdown AA Battery is accessible 24/7, but the site is overgrown and has graffiti. Be aware of your surroundings.
