Poppelsdorfer Schloss and Botanical Gardens
Walk through the quiet Botanical Gardens next to Poppelsdorfer Schloss before the crowds arrive. The grounds are free on weekdays, so this is a perfect time to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and see the sunbathing turtles at the pool before the gates open to the general public at 10:00.

Stand in the gardens facing west to watch the sunrise. The sun sets (and rises in the opposite direction in winter) toward the WSW, casting a soft golden light over the rococo palace facade. Note that the palace itself is not open to the public, but the exterior and gardens offer a serene view.

Walk just 3 minutes to Gelateria Italiana for a quick coffee and a sweet treat to warm up. They open at 11:00 in winter (Mar-Apr), which aligns well with the late January sunrise around 08:27, giving you time to enjoy the fresh air before settling in.

Head to Nees Bar Café Restaurant, located right next to the castle and botanical gardens. Open from 12:00 on weekdays, it offers a popular spot for a hearty breakfast or brunch. It is a short walk from the ice cream shop and provides a comfortable place to relax after the cold morning.
