Timeline

  1. 09:00

    Nanny's Root Cellar Kitchen

Grab a seat inside the historic 19th-century Loyal Orange Lodge. Order the fried cod's tongue or another classic Newfoundland dish. The portions are big, so you might not need another meal for a while.

  2. 10:15

    Klondike Trail

Walk the Klondike Trail. This 3½ km one-way path takes you through low hills and drawfen trees. The trail ends at Spillar's Cove, but the real reward is the golden view high on the cliffs above the sea. Be careful where you step near the edge to protect the sensitive ecosystem.

  3. 11:45

    Elliston Puffin Viewing Point

Head to the Elliston Puffin Viewing Point. Perched high on a cliff just a short walk from the roadway, this is supposedly the closest shore-based viewing of a puffin nesting site in the world. Enjoy the seabirds from a safe distance.

Local tip

The trail and viewing points are outdoors. Dress in layers as the coastal wind can be brisk even on sunny days.

Check before you go

  • Nanny's Root Cellar Kitchen does not list specific opening hours, so arrive early in the morning to ensure you get a table before they fill up.
  • The Klondike Trail is free, though donations are appreciated.
  • Check the weather forecast for wind and visibility before heading to the cliffs.
