Timeline
15:39
Grab a fair-trade coffee or tea at the Glashaus. It is run by university students and serves as a cultural hub on campus. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfect for an afternoon study break before heading out.
16:09
Walk to the Hermitage Old Palace. The park entrance is free, but you will need a ticket (€4.50) for the Old Palace itself. If you prefer to just wander the grounds, you can skip the palace entrance. The ornate fountains begin their waterworks on the hour, so arriving before 17:00 lets you see them one last time.
16:39
Watch the sun set toward the WSW over the palace gardens. The golden light starting at 15:45 will have softened the ornate architecture and trees. Stay until the light fades to appreciate the quiet of the summer residence.
17:09
End your walk at Richard-Wagner-Park. It is a short walk from the Hermitage area and offers a green space to decompress after the sunset viewing. It is a quiet place to reflect on the day.
Local tip
The Hermitage is about 6 km east of the town center. Take bus 302 or 303 to 'Eremitage' to get there. Check the bus route for times.
Check before you go
- The Hermitage Old Palace is closed from 16 April to 15 October. In winter (Oct 16-Apr 1), it is closed entirely. On 1 Oct-15 Oct, hours are 10:00-16:00, so you might miss the sunset if you arrive late. In Apr-Sep, it is open until 18:00, which is perfect for this plan.
- The Glashaus has no fixed opening hours listed, but it is active during the semester. Check if it is open when you plan to visit.
