Timeline
15:50
Grab a coffee and a pastry at BRÜ Specialty Coffee to start the evening. The café is open until 20:00, so you have plenty of time to settle in before the sun goes down.
16:20
Walk to the Museum Jean Tinguely. Arrive with 45 minutes to spare to explore Mario Botta’s striking building and the wacky animated mechanical sculptures inside before the light fades. The museum is open until 18:00, which is 55 minutes after sunset, but you will want to be out on the plaza for the view.
16:55
Step out onto the plaza in front of Restaurant Kunsthalle. This is the spot to watch the sun set toward the WSW. Look for the Fasnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain) sculpture by Tinguely itself on the plaza, a perfect companion to the kinetic art you just saw inside.
17:25
Head into Restaurant Kunsthalle for dinner. It is right there on the plaza. Choose the Schluuch section for a rustic, beer-hall atmosphere with casual fare, or the elegant 'white' section if you prefer a more formal dining experience (reservations are essential there). The restaurant is open until 23:30.
18:05
Finish the evening with a walk back through the museum grounds or a final look at the Tinguely machines in the dark, illuminated by the museum’s exterior lighting. The building itself is a work of art, and the contrast between the kinetic sculptures and the still night is striking.
Local tip
The museum is closed on Mondays. The plaza offers a clear view of the sunset direction mentioned in the facts, so position yourself near the fountain for the best angle.
