Timeline

  1. 10:00

    Art Gallery of Ballarat

Arrive at the Art Gallery of Ballarat as it opens at 10:00. The galleries are quietest in the morning, giving you space to view the old masters and modern works. The Eureka Flag is the centerpiece of the collection, so head straight for it to see the iconic 1854 banner up close.

  2. 10:45

    L'espresso

Walk six minutes to L'espresso. This former music store serves some of the best coffee in town alongside quality Italian fare. Pick a CD from the wall to listen to while you enjoy a housemade ice cream or a light lunch. It is open daily from 07:00 to 15:00, so you have plenty of time.

  3. 11:45

    Sovereign Hill

Take a 29-minute walk to Sovereign Hill. This open air museum recreates Ballarat during the 1850s gold rushes. Staff wear period costumes and you can try panning for gold. Arriving mid-morning allows you to explore the streets and buildings before the heat of the day peaks.

Local tip

The gallery is free, but check if you want to pay for special exhibitions. L'espresso is a great spot for a break because it is open all day, unlike some other cafes that close earlier.
