Timeline
17:15
Grab a coffee and a pastry at Groot Melkhuis. It opens at 10:00, so arrive early to secure a seat before heading out. The walk from the landmark area is short, about 15 minutes.
18:00
Walk to Sarphatipark. The view is 35 minutes on foot from the monument area, heading ENE. Find a spot on the grass facing the south-west. At 18:45, the sun will set directly behind the Monument Indië-Nederland in the distance. The park is lively in summer, so find a quiet corner if you want space.
19:15
Walk 8 minutes to Albina for dinner. This Surinamese restaurant is cheap, very good, and popular. If you arrive around dinnertime, you may have to wait for a table, but the food is worth it. The surroundings are modest, but the experience is authentic.
Local tip
The sunset alignment is specific to mid-October. If you visit in summer, the sun sets in the NW and will not align with the monument from this spot. In winter, the sun sets earlier and may be obscured by buildings before reaching the park.
