Maritime Afternoons at the Arsenal

Spend the early afternoon inside the stunning Arsenal of the Scheepvaartmuseum, then wander to a nearby spot for a drink before the crowds settle in.

Timeline

  1. 09:00

    Scheepvaartmuseum

Arrive at the Scheepvaartmuseum as it opens. The building itself, called the Arsenal, is impressive. Explore the stimulating, interactive exhibitions that cover 500 years of maritime history. If you want a break, the Central Square indoor courtyard is free and takes your breath away.

  2. 10:30

    Café Smit & Voogt

Walk nine minutes to Café Smit & Voogt. Locals love this place for its timber booths and the atmosphere. Sit on the footpath if the sun is out, as it is well placed to catch the afternoon light. It is open until late, so you can linger over a drink.

  3. 11:00

    Hannekes Boom

Take a short nine-minute walk to Hannekes Boom. This cosy, somewhat ramshackle bar offers a waterfront along the IJ. It is a great place to just hang out and have a beer, away from the clubbers. It is open from 11:00, so it will be welcoming.

Local tip

The museum shop, restaurant, and library at the Scheepvaartmuseum are open to the public free of charge, so you can explore the building even if you skip the paid exhibitions.
