A quick pint in Bowdon before the sun dips behind the medieval ruins.

Best time: 13 Nov to 19 NovAbout 75 min

Timeline

  1. 15:30

    Old Market Tavern

Grab a local cask ale at the Old Market Tavern. It is open until 23:00 on weekdays and 24:00 on weekends, so you have plenty of time to settle in before the walk.

  2. 15:43

    Stamford Park

Walk through Stamford Park toward Watch Hill Castle. The park is a 49-minute walk from the castle, but you only need to cover the distance to get into position. Find a spot with a clear view to the west-southwest.

  3. 16:15

    Stamford Park

Watch the sun set directly behind the medieval motte-and-bailey. On these dates, the alignment is perfect around 16:15 local time. The castle stands north of the River Bollin, silhouetted against the fading light.

  4. 16:35

    Old Market Tavern

Head back to the Old Market Tavern for a second round or a coffee. The golden light has faded, and the pub is still open for the evening crowd.
