Timeline
15:35
Start at the Old Market Tavern. Order a local cask ale or a Belgian beer and sit inside or on the pavement. The pub is open until 23:00 on weekdays, so it is ready for an early evening start.
16:00
Walk southwest for 50 minutes to Watch Hill Castle. This medieval motte-and-bailey sits on the boundary of Bowdon and Dunham Massey. The long walk allows you to digest your drink and transition from the town centre to the quiet parkland. Note that the walk is 50 minutes, so leave the pub promptly.
16:20
Stand at the top of the motte. Look southwest to watch the sun dip below the horizon. The light is golden just before this moment, so use the last few minutes to find a comfortable spot on the grass or stone.
Local tip
The walk to Watch Hill Castle is long (50 minutes). Wear comfortable shoes and check the weather. The castle is an archaeological site with no facilities, so bring what you need from the pub.
